This is a qualitative research study which utilised the case study methodology to explore the challenges of novice principals in managing their schools in Nquthu Circuit, KwaZulu-Natal. The sampled participants consist of 10 novice principals assumed between 2019 and 2022. The literature acknowledges that there is no formal training for principalship in South Africa. In addition, orientation workshops are not adequately helping novice principals to be proficient in managing their schools.
The aim of the study was to explore the challenges face by novice principals in managing their schools. Simi-structured interviews and documental analysis were used to collect the data from the participants. The findings of this study revealed that there are multiple challenges faced by novice principals in managing their schools. The study showed that the minimum requirements, teaching experience and three-year teaching qualification are not enough to prepare candidates for principalships. The management challenges ranged from management of curriculum, finance, and human relations, among many.
In light of the noted challenges, the study recommends the reconsideration of recruitment and selection process policy, formal and structured developmental programmes for novice principals, mentorship, and extensive support from DoE. |
