An exploration of the role of fingerprints in the investigation of housebreaking cases at Honeydew, South Africa

Abstract

This study set out to examine the role of fingerprints in the investigation of housebreaking cases in the Honeydew policing precinct, and ultimately identify practical guidelines for use by fingerprint experts and detectives to improve their work. The study adopted a qualitative case study research design approach influenced by the constructivist worldview. The study was conducted with a total of 15 purposively sampled members, comprising 10 housebreaking detectives and 5 (five) fingerprint expert members from the Local Crime Records Centre. Data was gathered through face-to-face semi-structured interviews, while data was thematically analysed through a three-step process involving, organisation, verification and interpretation. The study found that fingerprint analysis constitutes one of the most valuable housebreaking investigations methods, because fingerprints are reliable, unique, and do not deteriorate with age. The study also established the imperative for continuous first responder empowerment with knowledge and skills to advance the investigation of uncontaminated crime scenes, ensure efficient investigation, retain the integrity of the chain of evidence, and improve conviction rates by reducing the time spent in court proceedings.
