dc.description.abstract This dissertation investigated the core logistical issues contributing to the poor performance of Siyanda Bakgatla Spud shaft. The study was motivated by consistent underperformance at the mine. To this end, data was collected through historical performance records, site observations, and meeting interviews with key managers. The analysis entailed statistical techniques and root cause analysis across operational problem categories. These included support installation, drill and blast, equipment, technical services, safety, cleaning, geology, materials and human resources. The following software packages were used for data analysis, Microsoft® Excel®, and RStudio®. Results revealed a consistent trend of underperformance. The operational inefficiencies are primarily driven by logistical challenges in support installation for stopping and technical services in development. The consistent underperformance relative to planning targets in both stopping (square meters achieved) and development operations (primary metres). Lost blasts are more frequent in stoping operations and are closely associated with delays in support installation practices, equipment breakdowns and poor execution of the drilling and blasting cycle. Similarly, in development, the impact of technical services-related issues, particularly engineering, also contributes significantly to lost blasts. The root cause analysis has identified gaps in drilling and blasting, support installation, cleaning workflows, geotechnical assessments, equipment reliability, workforce management, supply chain, safety compliance and technical services. Key recommendations include reviewing and auditing current systems on support installation, technical services, drill and blasting, equipment, supply chain, cleaning, geotechnical and safety. This research contributes to mining logistics by providing a structured framework for analysing and addressing logistical inefficiencies in underground mining environments. The findings have immediate practical implications for Spud Shaft and offer a foundation for further research into system audits, equipment utilization, labour utilisation and maintenance practices. en
