South Africa continues to face high levels of violent crime, with many murders involving firearms. Effective collection and utilisation of firearm evidence are therefore essential for successful investigations and prosecutions. However, investigative challenges often limit its effective use, affecting case resolution and conviction rates.
Firearm evidence is a crucial element in murder investigations, linking suspects, weapons, and crime scenes. This study evaluated its utilisation at Piet Retief Police Station, South Africa. The study addressed the problem that, despite the frequent use of firearms in murder cases, the practical utilisation and management of firearm evidence by investigators often face operational and procedural challenges that may undermine investigative outcomes. The aim was to identify current practices, operational challenges, and strategies to enhance investigative effectiveness.
Guided by nine research objectives, a qualitative phenomenological design was employed with 20 purposively selected detectives. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis, and were analysed thematically to uncover patterns, challenges, and best practices. The study was framed by Locard’s Exchange Principle, which posits that every contact leaves a trace, providing a basis for understanding the transfer and evidential value of physical evidence.
Findings show that firearm evidence is pivotal for reconstructing crime scenes, corroborating witness statements, and linking suspects to offences. Key challenges include limited access to specialised equipment, insufficient forensic training, inconsistent procedures, and logistical constraints, which impact case resolution. The study recommends inter-agency collaboration, targeted training, standardised protocols for evidence handling, and improved resource allocation. It contributes both theoretically, by applying Locard’s Principle to rural policing, and practically, by offering strategies to strengthen forensic investigations. |
