Continuing Professional Teacher Development (CPTD) is a process that should develop
the knowledge and skills of teachers and leaders throughout their careers. The purpose
of this study is to explore the implementation of the CPTD policy in two secondary
schools in Mpumalanga Province. Purposive sampling was used to identify eight
participants using in-depth interview documents and analyses guided by McLaughlin's
conceptual framework. The primary objective of this study is to examine the
implementation of the CPTD policy in secondary schools; highlight challenges
experienced in CPTD policy implementation in secondary schools; and provide
strategies to mitigate challenges experienced in CPTD policy implementation in
secondary schools. This study reveals a lack of commitment as a challenge in trying
and implementing CPTD policy in schools. In one of the case study schools, courses
are organised by the heads of subjects while in the other, the heads of departments are
responsible for organising these content courses as specified by the timetable. At the
environmental level, this course is organised by the group leader and course advisor
while other teachers enrol in professional development activities in universities. Media
aids are therefore used to enhance teaching and learning. |
