Gender equality has been a topic of discussion for several decades, and has, in recent
years, gained even more prominence due to increased attention from various
authorities such women empowerment. This study explored the importance of gender
equity management strategy on performance of female managers and suggests some
recommendations on how EBMTC can achieve gender equality in leadership
positions. Currently, women represent 35% of the leadership positions at EBMTC
which is below the industry norm of at least 42% and South African population of 68
million people. The study adopted a qualitative research approach where semistructured
interviews were used for data collection from a sample of n=8 participants
using the purposive sampling technique. The research was conducted in October 2023
amongst The elicited inferences were analysed thematically in line with inductive
reasoning. The findings reveal significant challenges that relate to gender biases,
stereotypes, and unequal access to opportunities, hindering decision-making, project
assignments, and career advancement. Some of these challenges are grounded on
societal norms and culture while others are steeped on corporate environment, e.g.
the proverbial glass ceiling and “boys’ club” culture at work. Despite existing gender
equality strategies, such as equal pay policies and flexible work arrangements,
persistent gaps persist. The study emphasizes the urgent need for tailored
interventions, particularly Leadership Development Programs, mentorship, and
sponsorship initiatives, to address these challenges and foster a more inclusive workplace at EBMTC. |
