dcterms.abstract In this thesis sixteen symphonies composed in South Africa during the period 1970-1990, are analyzed with regard to motivic and thematic uses, melody, harmony, rhythm, form, texture and orchestration. Style characteristics are identified, the works evaluated and a comparative study undertaken. The following questions received consideration: has a national style been established? are there any significant influences especially African elements? what are the structural and stylistic characteristics of each symphony? does the symphony as a form or procedure contribute towards the development of contemporary music? did the period of isolation, politically or otherwise, have an influence on the composers compared to world-wide tendencies? to what audiences do the works appeal, if at all? what are the technical requirements, length, and musical content of these works? what orchestra is required for a performance? A standard procedure of analysis is followed against the background of analytic procedures employed by authorities listed in the bibliography Th.e symphonies are selected on a semantic basis; the word symphony/simfonia/ simfonietta/sinfonia/sinfonietta should form part of the title. The relevant works had to be composed either by composers born in South Africa or composers of other nationalities who wrote their symphony(ies) during their stay in South Africa. Twelve composers contributed towards the sixteen works which are discussed in chronological order: 1971: Carl A. van Wyk 1972: Malcolm Forsyth 1973: 1975: Peter JL Klatzow; Allan Stephenson; Carl A van Wyk Allan Stephenson viii 1976: 1977: 1978: 1979: 1984: 1986: 1987: Hans Roosenschoon Gideon Fagan Graham Newcater John R. Coulter; Allan Stephenson; Arthur Wegelin Petrus Krige Pieter W. Smit Allan Stephenson; Christopher L. James en
