Growing global expectations for higher education to address complex societal and economic challenges have intensified the critique of the responsiveness of university curricula to evolving labour market demands. The emergence of Industry 4.0 has highlighted the limitations of traditional curriculum models, which fail to adequately develop graduate employability capabilities. In South Africa, persistent skills mismatches across key economic sectors further underscore concerns regarding the relevance and quality of graduate talent supply. These challenges highlight the need for contextually responsive, empirically grounded curriculum frameworks that produce future-fit, industry-ready graduates.
In response, this doctoral study focused on Human Resource Management (HRM) graduates as a representative professional cohort, aiming to develop a competency-based curriculum development framework for Industry 4.0 curriculum design to enhance the employability of HRM graduates in South Africa. The study contributes to theory by integrating employability theory, competency-based education, and Industry 4.0 capability requirements into a coherent curriculum design framework tailored to the context of higher education in developing countries. Methodologically, it advances qualitative curriculum research through a sequential design that systematically integrates a structured literature synthesis with empirical insights from academic and professional stakeholders.
Guided by a constructivist philosophical orientation, the study adopted a qualitative research design implemented in sequential phases. Data were generated through a thematic literature review and semi-structured interviews with HRM lecturers from a selected university in the Western Cape and board members of the South African Board for People Practice (SABPP). The thematic literature review utilised the AOSIS and Web of Science databases to synthesise scholarly work on employability, competency development, and curriculum design. Thematic analysis identified key employability capabilities and curriculum design practices aligned with Industry 4.0 requirements.
The integration of theoretical and empirical findings culminated in the development of a curriculum design framework grounded in theory and informed by empirical evidence. Practically, the framework provides higher education institutions, curriculum designers, and professional bodies with a structured tool to guide curriculum renewal and strengthen the employability and future-readiness of HRM graduates in South Africa. Ethical clearance for the study was obtained in accordance with the guidelines of the UNISA Department of Human Resource Management Research Ethics Committee.
Ukonyuka kolindelo lwehlabathi lokuba imfundo ephakamileyo ijongane nemiceli-mngeni enzima yezentlalo nezoqoqosho kuye kwandisa ukugxekwa kokuba iinkqubo zezifundo zeedyunivesithi aziphenduli ngokwaneleyo kwiimfuno eziguqukayo zemarike yezabasebenzi. Ukuvela kwenguquko entsha yoqoqosho kugxininise imida yeendlela zesintu zokuyila ikharityhulam, ezisilelayo ekuphuhliseni ngokwaneleyo izakhono zokufaneleka emsebenzini kwabafundi abagqibayo.
