The main aim was to examine how women characters are portrayed in Mina hi mina with the intention of finding out if the sex roles assigned to female characters reinforce the stereotypical roles of Vatsonga women and to determine whether there is a link or shift to represent the current social, economic, and political reality. This is prompted by the fact that Vatsonga are patriarchal, and their literature mirrors their society. In this study, it is argued that female characters are assigned duties, chores and roles that support the dominance of males over females which helps in promoting patriarchal society. This study used the feminist literary criticism (which is informed by Feminist theory) which investigates how women are portrayed in literary texts. The backbone is resting on the cultural belief that women are inferior, dependant and have limited job opportunities. In conclusion, the study found that patriarchy dominates over women. It also revealed that there is a link between how female characters in Mina hi mina are created and the patriarchal society where they come from in mind. The findings also show that there are signs of shifting away from the traditional societal roles of women by some female characters who are given roles that were predominately assigned to males.

<description>Proverbs as tools for communication and development in Northern Sotho
Maapola, Paulina
This study explores the role of Northern Sotho proverbs as crucial instruments of communication and community development, deeply embedded in African oral traditions. Proverbs, often perceived as more than mere literary expressions, serve as vehicles for Indigenous knowledge, encapsulating cultural values, social norms, and collective wisdom. Using a qualitative research methodology involving interviews with native speakers, elders, and educators, the study examines the contextual applications of selected proverbs across societal domains, including education, leadership, family dynamics, and conflict resolution. By investigating these practical uses, the research highlights the multifaceted significance of proverbs within their respective communities.&#13;
The findings indicate that Northern Sotho proverbs play a pivotal role in fostering interpersonal communication, promoting social cohesion, and guiding ethical conduct. They serve as tools for decision-making, encouraging critical thought while reinforcing fundamental values such as respect, cooperation, and accountability. Moreover, the study underscores the enduring relevance of proverbs in contemporary society, asserting their potential to contribute to inclusive and culturally grounded development initiatives. It further advocates the recognition, integration, and preservation of African proverbs as essential components of cultural identity, suggesting that such efforts are vital for addressing the challenges posed by globalisation and language marginalisation.; Thuto ye e tsinkela diema tsa Sesotho sa Leboa bjalo ka didiriswa tse bohlokwa tsa kgokagano le tlhabollo ya setshaba, tseo di tsemilego medu ditsong tsa molomo tsa Afrika. <title>Portrayal of death, grief, and loss in selected Sesotho poems: a formalist approach</title>
<link>https://ir.unisa.ac.za/handle/10500/32299</link>
<description>Portrayal of death, grief, and loss in selected Sesotho poems: a formalist approach
Rasenyalo, Nonhlanhla Gertrude
The portrayal of death, grief, and loss in Sesotho poetry, which employs formalist theory as a theoretical framework for analysis and interpretation, is severely lacking in research. The theoretical significance of this study is to contribute to the existing body of research by examining how Basotho poets depict death, grief, and loss in their artistic literary creations, thereby highlighting the enduring power of language to explore these profound and universal aspects of human experience. In addition, the study adopted a descriptive qualitative approach underpinned by both the content and interpretative analyses. The population for this study was culled from a range of Sesotho poems as sources for data collection, with sixteen selected poems serving as a purposive sample for the current study. Since death, grief, and loss are ubiquitous human phenomena that are intensely emotional and traumatic experiences, the reader will gain the ability to interpret a poem's words in a variety of ways, including as expressions of empathy, loneliness, rage, frustration, and other emotions. This will give readers new perspectives and a profound understanding that these phenomena are universal and inevitable experiences for all humans and that confronting these themes does not alter their inevitability. Instead, it fosters a greater appreciation and acceptance of the immutability of these phenomena, treats them with respect and dignity, and teaches readers how to cope with these themes effectively. The findings and recommendations of this study will help promote Sesotho poetry among other indigenous languages as worthy of academic scrutiny, especially on the portrayal of death, grief, and loss.; Pōpo ea lefu, masoabi le tahlehelo dithothokisong tsa Sesotho, tse sebedisang mohopolo oa formalism e le motheo oa ho sekaseka le ho toloka, e sa ntse e haella haholo dipatlisisong.
