Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is currently attracting much attention as an approach to organisational change, but has received relatively little critical scrutiny. This paper seeks to examine the origins, antecedents and content of BPR as they are described in the main writings on the topic, in order to address three questions: Is there one form of BPR or many? Is it new? What factors may account for its popularity? Some of the criticisms that have been made of BPR are also discussed.

Many scheduling problems can be modelled as graph colouring problems. This paper gives a survey of heuristic algorithms used to colour graphs by describing a number of such algorithms found in the literature using an uniformn otation. We then compare these algorithms in terms of the time used and the quality of the colourings produced, on the basis of empirical results.

The associative network presents a practical and efficient means for the storage and retrieval of data. Although the recall abilities of single-layer associative memories have been well researched [3], little investigation of a similar nature has been done on multi-layer associative memories. An earlier theoretical analysis of recall abilities of single-layer associative networks is extended here to provide a more accurate formulation of empirical results and simulation results are presented in support of this analysis. The recall performance of the advanced distributed associative memory (ADAM ) is shown to deliver significantly better recall performance than multi-layer associative memories using Willshaw thresholding at all layers. Intermediate layer parameters that would yield optimum recall performance are investigated and shown to compare favourably with values suggested by information-theoretic derivations.

<description>Enabling a collaborative approach to management

In this paper the collaborative approach to management is examined and, in particular, how this approach could benefit from the right technological support. Collaborative management focuses on the joint performance of tasks, and values em­powerment, the group process and free-flowing discussion. The collaborative group process, based on consensus building, depends on an effective group interaction process. A model is proposed for consensus building and involves an iterative divergent/convergent group process which takes full advantage of the heterogeneity of co-actors. It is showed how, through the right technological support, the time-consuming process of consensus building could function as a practical day-to-day management  approach.
