This Open Educational Resource (OER), Lexicography for Modern Day Language Use, is designed to introduce learners to the theory and practice of dictionary-making in the digital age. It provides a comprehensive and interactive learning experience that explores the evolution of lexicography from traditional print dictionaries to modern electronic and online formats. Structured across multiple lessons, the OER covers key themes such as the history of lexicography, dictionary design, user-centred approaches and the role of technology in shaping contemporary language resources. It places particular emphasis on the South African context, highlighting the importance of lexicography in promoting linguistic equality, preserving indigenous languages and supporting multilingual education. As an OER, it is freely accessible and designed to support students, educators and researchers. It is available in four languages i.e. English, Sepedi, Tshivenḓa and isiZulu, ensuring inclusivity and broader reach across diverse linguistic communities. The OER is one of the key outputs of a project funded by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, reflecting a national commitment to language development and cultural preservation.
This learning material offers an engaging, activity-driven introduction to the study of dictionaries and language development in contemporary society. It combines theory with practical exercises, multimedia elements and reflective tasks to support active learning. The content emphasises real-world applications, including the design and use of digital dictionaries, and encourages learners to explore language within their own communities. With a strong focus on inclusivity, the material is presented in English, Sepedi, Tshivenḓa and isiZulu. It supports the development of linguistic skills while fostering cultural awareness and participation in evolving language practices.

<summary type="text">The interrelationships between leadership, employee empowerment and organisational citizenship behaviour in an open distance higher education institution
Naidoo, Linda
The open distance higher education environment is constantly evolving in terms of technology and student needs. Open distance higher education institutions require staff willing to engage in organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) to ensure the institution's smooth functioning and student satisfaction. Leadership and employee empowerment will play a significant role in encouraging OCB in an open distance higher education institution. This research focused on the interrelationships among leadership, employee empowerment, and OCB within the context of the open-distance higher education environment. The study also investigated the mediating effects of employee empowerment in the relationship between leadership and OCB. A cross-sectional research approach was applied, and a quantitative survey was conducted on a probability sample of 452 (N=452) university staff in an open distance higher education institution in South Africa. The exploratory factor analysis identified a four-construct measurement model for leadership, a three-construct measurement model for employee empowerment and a four-construct measurement model for organisational citizenship behaviour. The results indicated that the research instrument was valid and reliable for measuring leadership, employee empowerment, and OCB. A correlational analysis confirmed a significant positive relationship between leadership, employee empowerment and organisational citizenship behaviour. Structural equation modelling was used to test the mediating effects of employee empowerment in the relationship between leadership and OCB. Tests for significant mean differences revealed differences between the biographical variables of gender, age qualification, and number of years at the organisation and job level groups and organisational citizenship behaviour. The study recommends introducing mentoring and coaching, along with a charismatic leadership style, to encourage organisational citizenship behaviour in the institution. On a theoretical level, the study provides a deeper understanding of the concepts and contributes to the existing body of knowledge on leadership, employee empowerment, and organisational citizenship behaviour within the context of the open distance higher education environment. On a practical level, human resource practitioners and higher education institutions can use the results of this study to inform interventions that motivate staff to engage in OCB and boost workplace productivity.

The content nature and features of studies conducted in Africa relating to landfill impacts on informal waste pickers and surrounding communities are not known. Research trends and focus on studies conducted between 2015 and 2022 are also unknown. Currently there is no document which consolidated studies conducted in Africa relating to the impacts of landfill on informal waste pickers and surrounding communities published between 2015 and 2022, which in turn may guide future research direction. Epistemology which determined the researcher’s choice of the study method, how data was collected, analysed as well as how findings were interpreted was the philosophy which grounded this study. Epistemology shaped the researcher’s view of the world, the nature of knowledge, and determined how this knowledge was shared with others. The method used for this study was a systematic literature review. The identified and included studies were manually analysed using an inductive and iterative approach for qualitative data analysis. The findings from the reviewed studies indicate that informal waste pickers in landfills are faced with different occupational injuries including cuts, punctures, and animal bites. With regard to negative health outcomes, the studies reported that skin problems, respiratory &#13;
ailments, and eye infections were associated with the trade of waste picking in landfills. Documented musculoskeletal problems faced by informal waste pickers included, back, chest and joint pains. Studies reported that surrounding communities were also negatively affected by landfills. The landfill location, air and water pollution were among documented concerns. The most prevalent health challenges reported within communities included cancer, malaria, asthma, and various skin and respiratory issues. This review identified research gaps which need to be further explored to ensure that the impacts of landfills on informal waste pickers and surrounding communities in Africa are wholistically investigated. It is recommended that more studies be conducted in other African countries since the reviewed studies focused more on South Africa and Nigeria.
